2. Exploring and Evaluating Promotional Material for Existing films: Alice in Wonderland

1. The colour design that is basically used for all of the web pages for the Alice in Wonderland website are all dark colours with shades of dark light colours shown on few of the characters. The basic colour scheme that is used is black or dark blue. The backdrops of the pages are seen as dark and sinister in most of the pages. The spacing of each page is spaced with information about the topic of the page in a small section and the image of the background clearly distinct. The main focus point for most of the pages are, layout to capture the different characters on the pages.

2. The design for the pages have repetition of the title, the information that may be needed and everything else seems to be the same, except for the information placed on the page. For most the pages, the layout is similar in the way they have a small section of the page and the rest is covered with the image in the backdrop.

3. The overall feeling that is developed in the website is clean, crisp, dark, moody and maybe grungy. From the colours to the images you can clearly distinct the genre by looking that the images and the colour scheme. Most of the pages have a darker colour scheme, which maybe translated as having a horror genre but this can just be a sub-genre where they have more than one genre. Another genre that can be distinct from the feeling of the website is a fantasy genre. The genre is clear and dark due to the colours and images.

4. The format of the website is set out as being the same on each page, having the title on the left hand corner, big and noticeable. With having different the same information on the left, the layout of this information is very clear to understand and it’s very easy to follow as well. All of the pages are the same in the layout concept, which show great deal of detail to what the sub-topic is about.

5. The target audience that is directed towards is more for children where the story of Alice in Wonderland is concerned. But when you look at the colour scheme you consider that this film is directed towards a target audience a much older age than 10 or younger. I believe when you view the website you look upon an audience older than 15 because from the way the colour scheme is drawn, you notice a darker look upon this fairytale story. But if you think about, you notice that most of Tim Burton’s films are dark in the way he presents different versions of musicals or retold movies. From the colour scheme you notice that this version of Alice in Wonderland is darker than usual and you may guess that the target audience would be around the ages or 15 and older.

6. Well there isn’t anything bad of a good movie website. If the movie were a huge success in the theatres than you may have guessed that the website would be as good as the film. So far all the ‘hit’ films have a great website, with no bad problems about it. This may be caused because the movie was a hit and so they would have thought about doing a website that everyone would get more information about the movie. Overall there aren’t any bad concerns to this version of Alice in Wonderland.

1. Exploring and Evaluating Promotional Material for Existing films: The Lovely Bones

1. The colour design that is used for The Lovely Bones is a little bit different through out the website. Having a mixture of different colours on the Home Page, on the left darker colours e.g. dark blue, black, shades of orange and yellow, which are blended in with the colours on the right. These colours are shown as being yellow, orange colours and white. In the middle of the image, a blend between the light colours and dark colours are mixed together by the colour of purple. On the whole the home page is different from the character page, gallery page and the synopsis page. All these pages are different because they have used different background images. These colours and background images are different because it shows the viewers the genre of this film, which so far is shown as being fantasy, drama and from what the movie is about mystery.

2. The principal of design that is designed on this website is similar in the way the set out the pages. From the home page to the character page the layout is the same having a boarder around the important parts that are inside of the boarder and with the irrelevant information outside of the boarder. Of course the repetition of the title of the film is shown on every page in big print. The repetitions of different lists are placed on top of the page with the title of the film (I don’t know what it’s called but it’s information that you click on to find out what the film is about, character list and other information). Also, on the bottom of the page is the further information on different website e.g. Facebook, Twitter and other website that allow the viewers to follow the film.

3. The overall feel of the website is shown as being clean, bright and dark with having both dark and bright colours to show what the genre is about. The colours present the feeling of the film, with bright colours and ships in bottles (synopsis page) show one of the sub-genres of the film, fantasy. With dark colours on the Gallery Page, you have the feeling of the film has another sub-genre, which is shown as mysterious and dramatic. This is very affect in how you feel: scared, uncertain and distressed. With the different colours that are represented, you can pick out the genre of the film by the colour system and background image.

4. You can’t really tell what genre this is directed towards because they have different sub-genres that can say that it’s a fantasy with mysterious elements of the film or a dramatic film with elements of a little bit of violence. But if you haven’t seen the film you would like that this film was directed to 15 and over. But if you have seen this movie you would have shown this film to a younger audience younger because the film has a good message in it for the younger audience. 15 years and older is the age that this film is directed towards, this is just a guess. I believe that it’s direct towards this target audience because (as I said before) it shows a dark side of what this film is about e.g. the gallery backdrop page. Again the colours tell us whom this film is directed towards.

5. What I like about this website is that it shows you a clear statement about what this film is about and what genre is about. It’s a good movie that have a good website showing the element of a sub-genre of fantasy. It is very clear about where objects are and it has a good element of sound. This is very affect where it tells you what kind of film this is, but annoying also.
I don’t believe there is anything about this website that I don’t life because everything about it is good and it blends well with what the movie is about.

My movie Poster: Virus

This was an activity that we had to do on picking a random page from Wikipedia and whatever comes up will becoming our title of the film. Than we had to go on a website to find a random quote and find a picture from Flicker to make it our background of our poster. All of this has to be linked together, so that you can identify the genre by just looking at the poster by just picking out random images and quotes.

As you can see my random page from Wikipedia was about 'Virus'. But in fact it is the title of an album by the metal rock band Heavenly. But you don't know that do you?! So my quote that I had to choose from a website that displayed random quotes was this, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that don't matter". This quote was said by Martin Luther King Jr. so it was very inspirational, but I don't believe it's inspirational based on a horror kind of film though! The next thing that I randomly choose was my image of this grey, dark empty street with a little red car driving in a storm. This suited well with my random quote and title of my film because 'Virus' sounds like something from the genre of a horror or a thriller, and I thought that this image really blended well with what my title and quotation.

Now that I have all my random things together I have the privilege to put all of these images and quotations together to form a poster that I have no idea what it's about, but I guess that's the beauty of this activity. You don't know anything about it and your making a poster that comes from random things.

We have to go on photoshop and design our poster from just the random image for the background. Now that I had done that I had to choose what colour styles that I want. I just keep to the different colours of red because I represent my poster as a horror genre and mostly on horror genre film posters there are dark colour and reddish colours that represent the theme of horror and or blood, as red is suppose to symbolise it. Once I had my colour style, I had to think about what other things does a movie poster have on. So I thought and I look at the poster of The Lovely Bones and I noticed that it had the actors, the directors, the screenplay writers, the author of the book; which is actually based on a book, the month that it is coming out and the production company's that The Lovely Bones is produced by. When I designed all of these things I had to make sure that it was capable to read, so I had to change different colours so that it would blended in with the background because overall the background is pretty dark with the clouds and such.
Finally the final touch. I had to crop it because when I just saved most things were blurry and it wasn't clear. So I had to crop it and cut around the poster so that I wouldn't have the background shot in. Saved the actual poster and posted it up on my blog so that I can get a mark.

I believe doing this activity was very fun and exciting to do, because as I said the activity was basically 'random' and everyone was doing something different, which was very much interesting in the view of my fellow class members. It also got us think more about posters and how it shows us what genre it is by the colours, the images and the settings. It gives me a lot of thought about how my poster is going to be like for my film.

Movies that have Similar Genres: Thriller & Crime

Movies that have a Similar Genre: Drama

Reflection: 11/10/10

Today was interesting because I hadn't done my Post-Production Evaluation and he didn't even release it! But anyways, we have another assignment to do on our film. A couple of lessons back Mr Andrews had talk to us about making a web page for our film, like promoting our film by creating a web page. This was going to be designed to show what our film is about. We had to do a research task, where we had to go on Google and search Web Pages of movies that would suite our genre. We (as a group) had a few problems deciding on what genre our film was, so we had to google what the movie The Lovely Bones was and again we got different answers. I had recieved the genre as a Drama, Thriller, Crime, Mysterious and I think there was one more but I forgot. In the end the rest of the group had search the same genre so our genre of our film was Drama, Thriller, Crime, Mystery.
After we found what our genre was going to be, we had to go and find similar movies are have the genre and look if they have a Web Page. At school most of the Web Pages that I've been on are blocked or wouldn't open because there's something wrong with the school internet. This problems here has been a big problem because I can't find any Web Pages that are good and do the rest of the task, even though I found some other things to do. The other thing that I did was find actual movies who have the same genre before I start searching for Web Pages. This took a while last lesson because Olivia, Shelby and I didn't really do much work last lesson because we were just talking about Horror movies, which wasn't the best idea I don't believe... :S
So we didn't do much last lesson. This lesson why caught up with what we had to do because we heard that this whole research about finding the Web Pages is due by the end of next week so we had to be getting cracking.

Shelby was a great help today because she had found a website that had movies that were in fact similar to the genre of The Lovely Bones. When I went on the website I found great movies that I have never heard of because most of them are coming out this year or the next. So it was a really good website to search the genre films.

Near the end of the lesson Mr Andrews showed us 2 trailers of the very old Indian Jones: Raider of the Lost Ark film. This was to show us how the genre can affect the way we view the film by watch the trailers. It was old, but it had the same genre; action and it had the same style of what the retold version of Indian Jones had become.

The second trailer that Mr Andrews showed us was off a very scary version of Mary Poppins. When he said that I was like yeah I can actually see this happening because when I was younger I thought that it was a little bit scary. The trailer that he showed was actually really clever and funny in the same time because everyone knows the story of Mary Poppins and how it's a great musical and how fantasy is combined with a wonderful Nanny. But when Mr Andrews showed us this, WOW! This was a funny shock! It was actually really scary, because of the sound that it had produced, the lighting was darker and the took out the darker shots from the film and placed it into this scary version of Mary Poppins. I have to say, the person who came up with this idea is a genius and I don't believe that anyone could come up with something like this. I bet they were really bored and they had enough time on their hands!!

So you might be saying, what's the point of Mr Andrews showing us about this two different trailers? Well with the first one, Indian Jones, Mr Andrews wanted us to see that with a very old film the genre and the style how we know the Indian Jones version today, are still the same from showing the audience that they kind the genre much a same and that they kept the character much the same (as I look upon it). For the Mary Poppins one, we know the story of the musical, happy lively version one, but what if we twisted the story around and only showed the scary parts of the film in; what happens now? Ta, Da! You come up with a horror version of Mary Poppins!

So the point of this is to show is that trailers have the power of telling us what genre it is, what it is about and how the actual film could react to the audience by just watching the trailers.

Post-Production Evaluation

The problems that I encountered towards the technical parts were deciding on what shots to use in my final cut, because we had two completely different views of what different shots were going to be. The first day of shooting was different from the second day because of the weather, the way we filmed and the we acted because we had a better understanding on what we were suppose to be doing. No the shooting was a problem but deciding on what shots to put in the final cut. There were some shots that I used from the first day or shooting and the second day, so I had to incorporate both shots in together so that they may look natural. We also did shots over and over again because some of the group members didn’t feel comfortable in that shot so we had to do it over again, which gave us lots of options to choose from which was good in away. Another problem that I had was putting the shots together. Well it isn’t mainly a problem but an announce as such. For the editing part I didn’t really had any difficulties because I understood what I needed to be done, but the only thing about editing is that it takes lots of time and it’s pretty annoying putting these shots together. I had a little struggle with making my soundtrack in fact. I didn’t know what to do and I got so confused in picking out the loops. The first week we had received our second part of our assignment, I didn’t know what to do because there was so many loops and I didn’t know which loop sounded right in my film so I just played around with putting different loops together. Once I was confidant with all the loops I had to start on my soundtrack and in the end it sounded pretty good, to me that is. Through the middle of doing my soundtrack I really enjoyed doing it and it was pretty fun making a soundtrack for a film, even though I preferred composing an original score of scratch but to be honest if I had enough time I would do it and if I could be bothered doing it.

No I don’t believe that I had any missing files, but all my files were so mixed up that I was totally lost or confused about all of them. I did want Mr Andrews had told me to do, and that is label the files, which I did but I still got confused. During time went on, I got to know how I labelled things and where I placed documents in different files, so eventually I understood what I was going in the way I was placing my documents or files

For my group work, there weren’t any problems that we had which was good. Just before we had to do our soundtrack we resolved our situation, which was good for the group and for myself. I didn’t like having group arguments and it didn’t suit well with the rest of the group. As Mr Andrews had said, you don’t work with everyone, you just needed to endure it and get on with it. So I didn’t that, but than I thought that I was sick and tired of fighting and things were resolved. This whole argument was during the editing stage, so we resolved things before we started the soundtrack.

I thought that my pre-production did help a lot because it helped with designing our film and planning out what we wanted to do for the film. With having storyboards, the scripted, shot-lists and list of what we need to do and lists that we needed to make our film successful. These lists and planning skills really helped us with our creation of our film. The post-production didn’t really help us a lot because we knew what we wanted to do and we knew what scenes that we were going to be placed together, in our overall film. But for our final cut we had an image of what our film was going to be to us. So we didn’t really do much planning for the post-production schedule. The rough edits didn’t assisted in the editing process, because as I said before we had an idea of what our film is going to be and we imagine our version how we are going to interpret this film. So no the planning for the post-production was that useful but the pre-production planning was helpful. Strange I know but that’s just me!

The time-management issues that I encountered were based choosing what program to create my edit on. Firstly I had originally to do it on iMovie, but when Mr Andrews showed us there was a better and much easier version I didn’t know what to do because I was comfortable with iMovie and I didn’t really know Final Cut so I was comfortable with it. I had a trouble decided what program to do it on so that process took longer than I expected, but not that much longer because I knew that I had to start on my editing. But another annoying thing was that I had all ready finished my editing on iMovie and when Mr Andrews said that Final Cut was better I had to start again, which was most annoying. So that time-management situation was a problem because I had to start again with my editing on a different program. Plus I had to learn how to use this new program because I didn’t and that process took quiet a while too, so my chose in choosing a program to create my edit was a long but necessary one.

As I said before I didn’t really need the EDL of the Sound Design because I knew want to show in my film and I knew what fixed well together so I didn’t really need the EDL. I did it anyways so I wouldn’t get in trouble but I didn’t really refer to it mainly. I know that I should’ve referred to it but when you know your film from back to front you know how the film goes and matches well together. For the Sound Design, I don’t believe that I have ever done it because I thought that I didn’t really need it because I have all ready done my soundtrack and I thought that I wouldn’t need the time code, the dialogue/sound FX or the music required such as the style, volume and the tempo. I didn’t believe that I needed to write these things down, but I just came up with my soundtrack without using the Sound Design template, but I think that if I had used it I don’t believe that it would’ve helped me in anyway possible because I don’t see the point.

I believe that I took adequate and detailed reflections throughout my pre and post-production schedule. I did most of my reflections for every lesson that we had, but this term I just released that we are only suppose to be doing 1 or 2 reflections each week not one everyday. So I had extra hard work for myself, but sometimes I didn’t mind doing the reflections because most of the time they keep me on track with what I’ve done and what I need to be doing. No I don’t think I have provided enough evidence to support my work. The only evidence that I have shown is my word in the reflections I have done. These are the only evidence, but I could post some images of what I’ve been doing and what I have been research. But I don’t believe that there is anything else that I can do because most of the work that I have done, or about to about to do are set in a program and it takes a while to download and post images on my blog. But I’m guessing the sentence that I have just written is more of ‘I can’t be bothered’ sentences and I have to agree, so maybe for my next assessment I will try and post some picture on my blog about the websites and stuff. For not showing the evidence that I have done in class, but I have shown evidence in planning out my film in designing lists and templates. That’s the only evidence that I have displayed on my blog. I believe that my blog looks like a whole terms work by the evidence in templates and lists and reflections. Not to sound selfish (but I do), I’m really happy with the progress of my blog and the way I organise my time in doing these activities.

SKILLS:
1. Editing a film by putting different shots together
2. Using different programs that I haven’t used e.g. Final Cut and iMovie
3. Learning how to use GaragBand properly, by using the loops and making a soundtrack from loops

TECHNIQUES:
1. Remember where you put your files
2. Label your files and put them in their right place
3. When re-recording the voices, speak louder or change the volume to the program so you can hear what the voices are saying

TRICKS:
1. No tricks that are used

I am sort of satisfied with my final result. As I said in one of my previous reflections or evaluations, about what I would change if I had the chance. In case if you don’t feel like going back to my blog and looking for the paragraph stating that I would change this and that I well tell it again. If I had the choice I would change the storyline and change the story. If I had the chance to change the story than everything would be different, but as the story goes, I can’t do that. So if I had the chance to pick someone else’s story in my group than I would have. I didn’t really except that my story would end up like this. It sounds mean, but I didn’t really except that it would turn out like this. I know you can’t accept everything to be 100%, but it wasn’t what I imagined. Overall the outcome of the film was good in the way my crewmembers held their ground by involving themselves in the film as actors and part of the crew. I believe that it did come out okay, but there could have been quiet a few parts that needed to be checked and changed, but for our first trail we did pretty well!

As I said before I would change the story but as it says ‘aspects’ I would change some scenes like the park scene, where Susie gets beat up, the kitchen scene, the part where she wakes up and she goes downstairs and talks to Letty. But I’m guessing we could’ve done these chances, but none of my group could be bothered redoing it again and everyone thought that it was good as it was. Overall I would change the aspects to the original script because I believed that the original script didn’t linger on to the movie The Lovely Bones, but when they choose to do my film they changed the script around and it made it sound and look more of the movie of The Lovely Bones. This was a problem for me because I got my IDEA from the movie I didn’t want the actually storyline come from the movie but as I didn’t know this at that time I accepted the chance and went along with it. But to be honest if they kept to the original script it would be similar to The Lovely Bones.

I think I’m repeating myself, but I think that I’m not reading the questions ahead of myself as well. I believe that this questioned is answered in the last two previous questions. :D I’m getting ahead of myself!!

HOMEWORK: Discuss about 1 or 2 films from the other Class

THE ONE... about the Business Man

Was it GOOD:

In my own words, it's an all right film. In away it didn't capture my attention and I didn't want to watch more of the film. By the end of the film I got completely lost, but it was funny seeing how the actors tried to act and how they were trying to beat them up. It was entertain in a funny kind of way, but the storyline wasn't so crash hot.

IMPROVEMENT:

1. Add dialogue or improve on the dialogue because you hardly can hear what they are saying
2. Outline the characters more clearly
3. Outline the story
4. Delete some shots because it made it too slow. For example, who he's getting into the car and when he turns the ignition on. 'We get that he's in the car and he is driving away...'

COMPARE:

Honestly I can't compare. I don't mean to sound harsh and a b**ch or a spoiled brat, but I believe that my film was a better make than this one. Reasons. In mine...:
1. Better understanding of the storyline (I don't know, I'm guessing)
2. Can hear dialogue clearly
3. We have the option of two days of film the same things, but using different angles, lighting and things like that. So we had lots of options and all of us could choose from these options and it was good, that's why ours are so different because we could build the 'Park Scene' differently, for example.

THE ONE... with the Spells

Was it GOOD:

Bloody Hell it was AMAZING!! Gosh, there isn't any words to describe how good that film was!! I know that is mean, but it's the truth! They put so much effort and time in making this film and it's totally amazing! The storyline was amazing because you followed it and it caught your attention, which is the main thing!

IMPROVEMENTS:

I don't believe that there are many improvements that need to be made because everything was down well. Except
o There was a part were one of the characters was walking upstairs. They should've cut that part down
Nothing else!! :D

COMPARE:

Okay this film is way better than my edited version. This is because (for my version) I had a view sharp editing spots in the kitchen scene. Viewing my version of the film again, I notice that it's really sharp and harsh when they are flipping from Susie to the mother. It isn't smooth or anything like in this film, which is really good. They did have any special effects that changes the scenes or anything, it's just natural. For mine I had few special effects that change from one scene to the next. On the whole there's was better in the way they connecting to the audience and they really showed how they describe the genre of their film. From the moment the film start with the first scene, I was entranced by the film and the only way that I was entranced was that they engaged and they drew the audience into the film and it made them feel scared about the spells, the red and black background and the clocks. From this you can pick out the clear detail in what the genre is about and that's why it went so well with many other students.
The reason why mine isn't as great as this is because we didn't really know what our genre was and we didn't have that in our minds because we just filmed and for them, it seemed that the genre was stuck to their minds and they followed onto their genre. We just filmed and we didn't add in anything in to enhance our genre or anything like that. The story was amazing and it was just WOW!!

Reflections: First Day back from Holidays!!

Today was the first day back from the holidays and so far it has been all right. Creative Media was a relaxing subject, because we hardly did any work, except watch other peoples films from different classes, which was very interesting! I really enjoyed watching what other students had done in the terms of the story and of course the technical part of the film.

Mr Andrews talked to us today about last term reflections and how we were going to watch other peoples films. He told us that we should be looking at the editing and how they placed the shots together. There were some films that need to be improved on and there was one that was totally amazing! I don't know how to describe some of them because in away I didn't understand was happening. This happened with a few of the films, but eventually I figured out what they were about. Mr Andrews had a file of films, and he had said that he was going to show us these films. To be honest I was praying that my groups film wasn't on the file because it's so embarrassing!! It's all right for Caitlyn, Katie and Olivia because they're not in the film so much, but for Shelby and I... well that's a different story! In away I'm really.... not happy about it but come on who was going to do it anyways! If I had one wish to start again I would talk everyone out to not choose my film. It's really c**p!!
But as everything happens, Olivia's and Katie's version of the film was up and my heart was beating so fast because the acting and the storyline is so bad! But I was looking forward to be watching what versions they both did (even though I have all ready seen what they did).

All most near the end of the lesson, Olivia and Katie's film was the last on the file. Thank the Lord Mr Andrews didn't show the film today in that lesson! But the down side, he's going to show it tomorrow first period!! At least that is all right because I'm prepared about what we're doing tomorrow though. Oh btw there is a whole reason why he had down that...
The reason why was my whole groups (Caitlyn, Katie, Olivia, Shelby and Me) have completely different versions of how we presented the storyline. Well... it isn't completely different I don't think because I did take some ideas from Olivia and Shelby!! :P But for Caitlyn... none of my other group members have seen how Caitlyn has interpreted her version of the film, so I hope I can see hers tomorrow because I'm really looking forward to see what she has down. For the rest, I have seen them thousand times!! So there is not surprise there!! LoL!!

Mr Andrews has given us homework.
1. Write a reflection about 1 or 2 films we have seen today in class (films from the other class) and discuss the technical elements.
